What Are Chase Pieces? Why Diecast Collectors Hunt Them
Share
What Is a Chase Piece?
A chase piece is a rare variant of a standard diecast release, intentionally produced in much smaller quantities and randomly inserted into cases. The term "chase" comes from the hunt — collectors literally chase them down at retail, through trades, or from specialty shops like More Than Diecast.
Chase pieces typically feature a unique finish, color, or detail not found on the regular release. They're the same model, but rarer, more visually striking, and significantly more valuable on the secondary market.
How Are Chase Pieces Made?
Manufacturers like Mini GT and Hot Wheels produce chase variants at a ratio of roughly 1 per master case — sometimes fewer. That means for every 72 or 96 standard units produced, only 1 chase piece exists in that batch. The packaging is usually identical or nearly identical to the standard release, making them difficult to spot without knowing what to look for.
Why Do Collectors Want Them?
Chase pieces sit at the intersection of rarity, design, and the thrill of the hunt. Here's why they're so sought after:
- Scarcity — low production ratios make them genuinely hard to find.
- Unique finishes — chrome, matte, or special liveries not available in standard runs.
- Resale value — chase pieces routinely sell for 3–10x the retail price on the secondary market.
- Display appeal — they stand out in any collection and spark conversation.
A Real Example: Mini GT Nissan Z VeilSide FFZ400 Chase
One of the most hunted chase pieces in our inventory is the Mini GT Nissan Z VeilSide FFZ400 1:64 Die-Cast – Orange Chase #989. It's a chrome-detailed variant of the already popular standard Orange FFZ400 release — same aggressive VeilSide widebody, but with a finish that makes it impossible to miss on a shelf.
How to Get Chase Pieces
Finding a chase piece at retail is largely luck. Your best options are:
- Buying from specialty diecast retailers who open cases and list chase pieces individually.
- Following collector communities and forums for trade opportunities.
- Checking More Than Diecast — we list chase pieces as they come into stock.
